ROSEMONT, IL – The Hamilton Bulldogs dropped a 3-2 decision to the Chicago Wolves at the hands of a Darren Haydar game-winning goal on the power play with 0.1 second remaining in the third period on Wednesday night at Allstate Arena. The loss was the ‘Dogs fifth-straight and drops their record to 31-27-2-5 on the season.
Chicago opened the scoring at 3:42 of the first period on the power play when Scott Lehman notched his first goal of the 2007-2008 campaign. The American Hockey League’s leading scorer Jason Krog and defenceman Nathan Oystrick earned assists on the 1-0 goal.
Rookie Brock Trotter evened the score 1-1 for the Bulldogs with his first-career AHL goal at 14:22 of the opening frame. On a 2-on-1 rush, Trotter took a pass from Matt D’Agostini and fired a shot past Wolves netminder Ondrej Pavelec. Corey Locke also picked up an assist on the goal that ended Hamilton’s goalless drought at 131:12.
After a scoreless middle stanza, the Bulldogs took a 2-1 lead at 8:19 of the third frame when Locke notched his team-leading 22nd tally of the season. Trotter broke into the Wolves zone and fed Locke who one-timed a shot just under the crossbar and into the back of the net.
Nathan Oystrick responded for Chicago just 1:37 after Locke’s go-ahead goal with his 12th marker of the campaign at 9:46 of the third period. Joe Motzko and Steve Martins earned assists on the 2-2 goal.
With less than one second remaining in the final frame, officially at the 19:59 mark, Haydar notched his 13th goal of the season to lift the Wolves to a 3-2 win. Krog, who picked up his second point of the night, and Grant Lewis earned assists on the game-winning goal scored on the power play.
Between the pipes, Yann Danis made 22 saves on 25 shots in a losing effort for Hamilton, while Pavelec stopped 20 of the 22 shots he faced to earn the win for Chicago.
The Bulldogs were 0-for-3 on the power play and haven’t scored in their last 25 attempts with the man advantage. Chicago was 2-for-3 with the extra man in the game.
The defending Calder Cup Champion Hamilton Bulldogs return to action on Saturday, March 15th at 4:00 p.m. when they take on the Toronto Marlies at Ricoh Coliseum.
