Hamilton, ON - The Hamilton Bulldogs defeated the Toronto Marlies 5-2 on Monday night in front of 7,619 fans at Copps Coliseum. The Bulldogs' power play converted three chances while David Desharnais had two goals.
The Marlies got on the scoreboard first at 9:07 of the opening period while on a power play. Brendan Mikkelson blasted a shot from the point that was saved by Hamilton starting goaltender Cedrick Desjardins. The rebound bounced onto the stick of Stefano Gillati, who flicked the puck past a sprawled Desjardins.
P.K. Subban tied the game 1-1 at 11:57 of the first period. Ben Maxwell fed a pass to Desharnais, who was positioned at the right side of the net. Desharnais then dished a pass to Subban, who slid the puck between the legs of Toronto starting goaltender Adam Munro.
The 'Dogs took the lead at 2:51 of the middle stanza. Alex Henry sent the puck to Greg Stewart who was stationed behind the Toronto net. Stewart then quickly centred the puck to Andrew Conboy, who flipped a shot past Munro.
The Marlies tied the game 2-2 at 4:15 of the second frame. After winning a battle behind the Hamilton goal, Darryl Boyce fed the puck in the slot to Ben Gordon, who wristed a shot past Desjardins for his first goal as a Marlie.
At 10:11 of the second stanza, Yannick Weber scored on the power play. While skating into Toronto's zone, J.T. Wyman fed a pass to Mikael Johansson, who proceeded to send the puck to the left point where Weber was positioned. Weber one-timed a slap shot that beat Munro over the glove to give the Bulldogs a 3-2 lead.
Desharnais gave Hamilton a 4-2 lead at 11:44 of the final frame. Subban blasted a shot on net that was saved by Munro. The goaltender could not contain the rebound and a scrum followed. Desharnais banged the loose puck over the line and past Munro. Desharnais added his second goal at 14:27 to give the 'Dogs a 5-2 lead. While on the power play, Weber hammered a slap shot towards the net. Desharnais tipped the shot, which bounced off the post and into the back of the net.
The Bulldogs host the Rochester Americans at 7:30 p.m. at Copps Coliseum on Wednesday, December 30th for the Salute the Troops night.
