HAMILTON, ON – Despite a 35-to-28 advantage on the shot clock, the Hamilton Bulldogs dropped their second straight game to the Toronto Marlies on Wednesday night with a 5-2 loss at Copps Coliseum. The ‘Dogs record drops to 23-21-1-5 on the season and 1-5-0-0 in six games against the Baby Leafs.
Toronto opened the scoring at 1:31 of the first frame when John Mitchell notched his 15th goal of the season. Colin Murphy drew the lone assist on the 1-0 tally.
Bulldogs forward Duncan Milroy tied the game 1-1 at 7:52 of the first period by deflecting a Daniel Corso point shot over the glove hand of Marlies goaltender Scott Clemmensen. The goal was the 71st of Milroy’s career, tying him with Brian Swanson and Tomas Plekanec for second place on Hamilton’s all-time goals list. Corey Locke holds the franchise lead with 75 career tallies.
The Marlies restored their one-goal lead at 15:15 of the first stanza when Jay Harrison banged home a rebound past Bulldogs netminder Jaroslav Halak on a power play. Bates Battaglia and Jeremy Williams earned helpers on Harrison’s seventh goal of the season.
Despite out-shooting Toronto 13-to-7 in the middle stanza, Hamilton couldn’t muster a goal and the score remained 2-1 heading into the final frame.
With two goals early in the third period, Toronto jumped out to a 4-1 lead. Derrick Walser potted his 13th goal of the season at the 1:34 mark to make the score 3-1. Then at 9:08 of the frame, Chris Harrington put the Marlies up by three with his sixth tally of the campaign.
The teams exchanged goals 59 seconds apart late in the third frame to round out the game’s scoring. Greg Stewart scored his ninth goal of the season at the 17:30 mark to pull the ‘Dogs within two goals at 4-2. Williams then sealed a Marlies’ 5-2 victory at the 18:29 mark with an empty-net goal.
Between the pipes, Hamilton’s Jaroslav Halak made 23 saves on 27 shots in a losing effort, while his counterpart Clemmensen stopped 33 of 35 shots to earn the victory for Toronto.
The Bulldogs were 0-for-2 with the man advantage while the Marlies went 1-for-2 on the power play.
