MONTREAL, QUEBEC – Montreal Canadiens General Manager Bob Gainey announced today the signing of forward Greg Stewart to a one-year, two-way American Hockey League / National Hockey League contract for the 2009-2010 season. As per club policy, financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
In 2008-2009, Stewart, 23, skated 51 regular season AHL games with Hamilton and in 20 regular season NHL games with Montreal, including 17 of Canadiens’ final 25 contests after being recalled from the Bulldogs on February 17th. In his third professional campaign, the Kitchener, Ontario native made his NHL debut on April 5th, 2008 and registered one point (1 assist) with 32 penalty minutes while averaging eight minutes and 36 seconds time on ice in 20 regular season games with the Montreal. In 51 regular season games with Hamilton, the 6’2”, 200-pound right-winger produced 17 points (7 goals, 10 assists) with a +8 rating and a team-high 170 penalty minutes. Stewart also participated in two Stanley Cup Playoff games with the Canadiens and in two Calder Cup Playoff games with the Bulldogs last season.
After amassing 23 points (eight goals, 15 assists) and 126 penalty minutes in his first professional season with the ECHL’s Cincinnati Cyclones in 2006-2007, Stewart notched 17 points (10 goals, seven assists) and 137 penalty minutes in his first AHL campaign with the Hamilton Bulldogs in 2007-2008.
Stewart, who accumulated 83 points (44 goals, 39 assists) and 270 penalty minutes during his three seasons in the Ontario Hockey League with the Peterborough Petes, was selected by the Montreal Canadiens in the eighth round, 246th overall at the 2004 NHL Entry Draft.
