HAMILTON BULLDOGS WEEKLY RELEASE

 

The Hamilton Bulldogs (American Hockey League affiliate of the Montreal Canadiens) will look to extend their lead in the Western Conference and North Division standings with three home games on the schedule this week.  The 'Dogs will take to the ice at Copps Coliseum on Wednesday, March 3rd, hooking up with the Adirondack Phantoms (American Hockey League affiliate of the Philadelphia Flyers) at 7:30PM EST.  Hamilton will get one day's rest before welcoming the Chicago Wolves (Americans Hockey League affiliate of the Atlanta Thrashers) on Friday, March 5th for a matchup between the top two teams in the Western Conference.  Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30PM EST.  One night later on Saturday, March 6th, the Hartford Wolf Pack (American Hockey League affiliate of the New York Rangers) will be in town for a 7:00PM EST contest at Copps.

Last week, the Bulldogs strung together three straight victories at home, never allowing more than a single goal against in any of the wins.  Hamilton started the week off by defeating the Toronto Marlies (American Hockey League affiliate of the Toronto Maple Leafs) 3-1 on Wednesday, February 24th.  The 'Dogs then welcomed the Rochester Americans (American Hockey League affiliate of the Florida Panthers) on Saturday, February 27th, beating the Amerks 4-1.  One night later on Sunday, February 28th, the Bulldogs beat the Marlies for the second time in five nights, this time by a 5-1 margin.

BULLDOGS NOTES:

  • Hamilton D Yannick Weber made his return to the Bulldogs lineup in Saturday's 4-1 victory over the Rochester Americans after representing his native Switzerland on the Men's Ice Hockey team in the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games. Team Switzerland squeaked out a narrow 3-2 shootout victory over Team Belarus in the qualification round, but fell to the United States 2-0 in the quarterfinal round. The Bulldogs would like to congratulate Yannick for his superb play throughout the games.
  • The Bulldogs are currently on a five-game winning streak where they have outscored their opponents 21-6.
  • Hamilton's 86 points are currently 16 more than any other team in the North Division.
  • Bulldogs C Brock Trotter has scored six goals and seven assists for 12 points in his last 10 games. The former Denver Pioneer leads the Bulldogs and is tied in 5th in the AHL with 28 goals and 33 assists for 61 points in 57 games played this season. Trotter's 28 goals also put him in a tie for 4th in the league in that category.
  • Hamilton C David Desharnais is currently on a five-game point streak that has seen the forward earn nine points (four goals, five assists). Desharnais ranks second on the team and 11th in the league with 20 goals and 37 assists for 57 points in just 43 games played this season.
  • Bulldogs LW Tom Pyatt was recalled by the Montreal Canadiens on Sunday, February 28th. Pyatt ranks fifth on the 'Dogs in points with 35 points (13 goals, 22 assists) in 41 games.
  • The Bulldogs have allowed the fewest goals against in the league, having only been scored on 133 times. Hamilton goaltenders Cedrick Desjardins and Curtis Sanford sit 1st and 2nd in the league in goals-against-average with a 1.93 GAA and 2.00 GAA respectively.
  • The 'Dogs have killed off 28-straight opposition power-plays while scoring three shorthanded goals during that span.


UPCOMING GAMES:

  • This game will be the fourth and last contest between the Western Conference rivals this season
  • In their last meeting on January 30th, the Bulldogs got a narrow 3-2 shootout victory over the Wolves in Chicago
  • The Bulldogs currently hold a 3-0-0-0 record against Chicago this season
  • The Wolves currently occupy top spot in the West Division with a 38-18-1-4 record and 81 points
  • Last season, the Bulldogs managed a 2-0-0-0 record against Chicago
  • Hamilton's all-time record against Chicago currently sits at 12-7-0-2-0
  • C Jason Krog (12-49-61) is leading the Wolves in scoring with 12 goals and 49 assists for 61 points in 59 games played this season

  • This game will mark the second and last contest between Hartford and Hamilton this season
  • In their last meeting on December 19th, the visiting Bulldogs defeated the Wolf Pack 4-1
  • Hartford currently sits in 7th place in the Atlantic Division with a 26-27-5-4 record and 61 points
  • In 2008-2009, the Bulldogs managed a 2-0-0-0 record against Hartford
  • Hamilton currently holds a 6-3-0-0-0 all-time record against the Wolf Pack
  • Former Bulldogs C Corey Locke (24-44-68) is atop the Wolf Pack's scoring race with 24 goals and 44 assists for 68 points in 62 games played this season

ALUMNI WATCH:

There are more than 40 former Bulldogs on 2009-2010 National Hockey League rosters. Over 60 percent of all former 'Dogs have played in at least one NHL game. Here are a few highlights and accomplishments of ex-'Dogs from this past week:

  • The Hamilton Bulldogs would like to congratulate the 10 alumni who were selected to Olympic rosters for the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver.  Forwards Mikhail Grabovski, Andrei Kostitsyn, and Sergei Kostitsyn were chosen to represent Belerus.  D Jan Hejda and C Tomas Plekanec suited up for the Czech Republic.  Minnesota Wild F Antti Miettinen wore the blue and white for the bronze-medal winning Team Finland.  G Jaroslav Halak and F Marcel Hossa skated for Slovakia.  Stalwart D Mike Komisarek and Vezina Trophy winner G Tim Thomas were chosen for the silver-medal winning United States.
  • Team Slovakia G Jaroslav Halak got two wins for his country last week, en route to a 4th-place finish in the Men's Hockey tournament.  Halak made 16 saves as Slovakia defeated Team Norway 4-3 (Feb. 23), then made 26 saves in a 4-3 victory over Team Sweden (Feb. 25)

Cable 14 will also carry Rogers Television's live coverage of six Hamilton Bulldogs versus Toronto Marlies games at Ricoh Coliseum.
