HAMILTON, ONT – Hamilton Bulldogs President Stephen Ostaszewicz announced today that Ashley Allison and Matthew Galan, graduating Grade 12 students at Hamilton’s Sherwood Secondary School, have been selected as winners of the 2013 Bulldogs Foundation Scholarships.

The Bulldogs Foundation Scholarships are awarded annually to two student athletes who consistently display a concern for others, demonstrate leadership, sportsmanship, initiative and participate to the best of their ability on a daily basis.

Ashley Allison has excelled at Sherwood Secondary School in a variety of activities throughout the past four years.  Athletically, Allison helped the Sherwood Saints capture City Championships in Girl’s Field Hockey and Girl’s Ice Hockey and played for Team Canada at the World Floorball Championships.  Academically, Allison successfully completed her Specialist High Skills Major in Health and Wellness.  Allison also served as a peer tutor in the hockey program and helped grade nine students transition into high school.  Allison plans to major in Sociology when she continues her education at Brock University, starting in the fall of 2013.

Matthew Galan has been a dedicated student athlete at Sherwood Secondary School for four years.  Consistently displaying concern for others, Galan showed outstanding leadership and sportsmanship on the baseball diamond, football field and in the classroom, day in and day out.  Galan did his teachers and fellow students proud when he represented Sherwood Secondary School in the community during his Co-Operative Education Program placement with the Hamilton Bulldogs last fall.  Galan will further his education at Mohawk College where he intends to major in Business – Marketing, beginning in the fall of 2013.

Allison and Galan were each presented with a plaque at Sherwood Secondary School’s Convocation Ceremony today.  As Bulldogs Foundation Scholarship recipients, both students will receive $1000 towards their post-secondary school education.

The Bulldogs Foundation was established in 2007.  The mission of the Bulldogs Foundation is to enrich the lives of children and youth in the Greater Hamilton Area through the assignment of tickets, cash donations and gifts in kind.  By doing so, the Bulldogs Foundation aims to promote the creativity of interactive programs involving education, physical fitness and personal well-being.  The main purpose of the Bulldogs Foundation is to strengthen and broaden the base of the Hamilton Bulldogs community support by providing funds to non-profit community groups and by support educational and community programs.  Through the team’s Foundation, the Bulldogs operate the Dawgs Breakfast Program which allows over 2,000 students at three high-needs Hamilton schools to start the day with a healthy and nutritious breakfast.
