HAMILTON, ONTARIO – Grand Rapids Griffins forward Gustav Nyquist scored a goal, an assist and the only goal of the shootout as the Griffins topped the Hamilton Bulldogs 4-3 on Saturday evening at Copps Coliseum.
With Bulldogs goaltender Robert Mayer on the bench for an extra attacker, forward Akim Aliu scored with 11 seconds to play to force overtime, but Hamilton would only manage a single point in the shootout loss.
For the second straight night, Bulldogs defenceman Greg Pateryn opened the scoring in the first period, this time with a rip from the point, with assists going to defenceman Magnus Nygren and forward Martin St. Pierre. Grand Rapids replied midway through the second period when Nyquist put one past Mayer at 9:12, with defenceman Brennan Evans and forward Tomas Jurco drawing assists.
But nearly as soon as the Griffins tied things up, ‘Dogs forward Sven Andrighetto put Hamilton ahead again, 2-1, just 18 seconds later. Pateryn and forward Patrick Holland earned assists.
Late in the second, with Andrighetto in the penalty box for high sticking, Grand Rapids forward Calle Jarnkrok tied things up 2-2 on the power play at 18:01, with assists from Nyquist and defenceman Adam Almquist.
