UTICA, NEW YORK – It took six rounds of the shootout, but the Hamilton Bulldogs left Utica, New York on Saturday evening with their third straight win as the ‘Dogs (15-14-0-4) topped the Utica Comets (10-16-1-2) 4-3 at Utica Memorial Auditorium.
In a first period paced by the Bulldogs – as Hamilton out-shot Utica 16-9 – it was the Comets that struck first. With just 12 second left in the opening frame, Utica forward Alexandre Grenier notched a power play goal to give his team a 1-0 lead. Defenceman Henrik Tommernes and forward Benn Ferriero earned assists on the play.
Bulldogs forward Gabriel Dumont struck back for Hamilton with his fifth goal of the season just 27 seconds into the second period when he buried his own rebound past Utica goaltender Joe Cannata. Forwards Nick Tarnasky and Mike Blunden drew assists on the play.
Hamilton forward Louis Leblanc fired home his team-leading ninth goal of the season at 17:08 of the second period to make it 2-1 ‘Dogs, assisted by forward Maxime Macenauer and defenceman Darren Dietz.
Just 47 seconds into the third period, Hamilton took a 3-1 lead off a howitzer from the point by defenceman Greg Pateryn, assisted by Dumont and Blunden.
But Utica battled back throughout the third period. Less than four minutes later, forward Darren Archibald made it a 3-2 game, assisted by defenceman Alex Biega.
With just over two minutes to play in regulation, Utica pulled Cannata for an extra attacker and Tommernes tied the game 3-3 with a power play goal, assisted by Ferriero and forward Cal O’Reilly.
After a scoreless overtime, Hamilton won the shootout 3-2 off goals by forwards Maxime Macenauer and Martin St. Pierre as well as defenceman Nathan Beaulieu. Grenier and forward Nicklas Jensen scored the shootout goals for Utica in defeat.
Mike Condon made 28 saves on 31 shots in the Bulldogs net in the win. Cannata made 37 saves on 40 shots for the Comets in the loss.
The Bulldogs went 0-for-1 on the power play, while the Comets went 2-for-6.

Hamilton’s next game is scheduled for Friday, January 3rd, when the ‘Dogs will travel to Abbotsford, British Columbia to take on the Abbotsford Heat (AHL affiliate of the Calgary Flames) at Abbotsford Entertainment & Sports Centre at 10:00 p.m. The Bulldogs return to Copps Coliseum on Saturday, January 11th when they will host the Rochester Americans (AHL affiliate of the Buffalo Sabres) at 7:00 p.m.
