HAMILTON, ONTARIO – Hamilton Bulldogs forward Christian Thomas opened the scoring late in the first period, but the Lake Erie Monsters (25-27-0-6) replied with four unanswered goals to top the ‘Dogs (25-28-1-4) 4-1 on Sunday afternoon at FirstOntario Centre.

Thomas fired a one-time slap shot past Monsters goalie Calvin Pickard high blocker to give the ‘Dogs a 1-0 lead with 4:05 to go in the first period. Assists went to forward Sven Andrighetto and Maxime Macenauer on Thomas’ eighth goal of the season.

With just over six minutes to go in the second period, a Lake Erie defender flicked a broken stick into the middle of a Hamilton offensive opportunity, so the ‘Dogs were rewarded a penalty shot. With an opportunity to go up 2-0 on Andrighetto’s stick, he was stopped by Pickard on the penalty shot attempt.

Just over two minutes later, Monsters forward David van der Gulik tied the game 1-1 on the power play, with assists from defencemen Karl Stollery and Matt Hunwick.

With 49 seconds to go in the second period, van der Gulik notched his second goal of the afternoon to give Lake Erie a 2-1 lead. Forwards Andrew Agozzino and Brad Malone collected assists on the play.

Hunwick made it 3-1 on the power play 9:11 into the third period, with assists from van der Gulik and Stollery.

Lake Erie forward Michael Schumacher extended his team’s lead to 4-1 at 13:45 of the third period, with an assist from forward Colin Smith.
