WILKES-BARRE, PENNSYLVANIA – Hamilton Bulldogs forward Mike Blunden scored late in the first period to get his team on the board, but three unanswered Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins goals after that sunk the ‘Dogs (25-29-1-4) in a 5-1 loss to the Pens (33-20-3-5) on Friday evening at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania.
Penguins forward Andrew Ebbett opened the scoring with a shorthanded penalty shot 11:45 into the first period after Bulldogs forward Gabriel Dumont hauled him down on a breakaway chance.
Just over three minutes later, Wilkes-Barre / Scranton forward Anton Zlobin fired a wrist shot from the high slot on past Hamilton goaltender Devan Dubnyk on the power play to extend the Pens’ lead to 2-0, with assists from forwards Denver Manderson and Harry Zolnierczyk.
With 2:20 to go in the opening period, Blunden slid a rebound past Wilkes-Barre / Scranton goaltender Peter Mannino to cut the deficit to 2-1. Defenceman Joel Chouinard and forward Martin St. Pierre earned assists.
At 14:53 of the second period, Penguins forward Chuck Kobasew made it 3-1, with assists from forward Dominik Uher and Ebbett.
Twenty-three seconds later, Wilkes-Barre / Scranton defenceman Brian Dumoulin beat Dubnyk to make it a 4-1 game, with assists from Zlobin and Manderson. After the goal, Dubnyk was replaced in the ‘Dogs crease by goaltender Robert Mayer.
Zlobin potted his second goal of the evening at 12:43 of the third period, with assists from Zolnierczyk and defenceman Brendan Mikkelson.
Dubnyk made 10 saves on 14 shots in 35 minutes in the Bulldogs net and was credited with the loss. Mayer made four saves on five shots in relief. Mannino made 26 saves on 27 shots for the Penguins in the win.
Hamilton went 0-for-4 on the power play, while Wilkes-Barre / Scranton went 1-for-2.

Hamilton’s next game is scheduled for Saturday, March 15th when the ‘Dogs will visit the Syracuse Crunch (AHL affiliate of the Tampa Bay Lightning) at War Memorial at Oncenter at 7:00 p.m. The Bulldogs return to FirstOntario Centre on Wednesday, March 19th, when they will host the Abbotsford Heat (AHL affiliate of the Calgary Flames) at 7:30 p.m.
